iOS 14 is coming out today, and Apple users have been eager to get their hands on the update, with many keen users previously signing up the public beta testing.

Apple’s Craig Federighi said that iOS 14 is ‘the biggest update we’ve ever made to the Home Screen.’

iPhone users only have to wait a few more hours until the major update is available to download for free.

But what time will iOS 14 be available today and which Apple devices can it be downloaded on?

What are some of the key updates in iOS 14?

These are the key changes you’ll see with iOS 14:

  • App Library – all your apps will be automatically organised so they fit onto one screen, rather than spread across many
  • picture-in-picture mode
  • Compact calls – calls no longer take up the entire screen
  • Widget size customisation
  • Siri’s AI has been improved
  • Pin important iMessages
  • New Memoji options
  • Apple Maps – include guides for specific areas, cycling routes and electric vehicle (EV) routing
  • Car Play now has a digital car key option
  • App Clip feature – users can scan QR codes to download apps quickly

Apple’s Craig Federighi said: ‘iOS 14 transforms the most iconic elements of the iPhone experience, starting with the biggest update we’ve ever made to the Home Screen.

‘With beautifully redesigned widgets on the Home Screen, the App Library that automatically organises all of your apps, and App Clips that are fast and easy to discover, iPhone becomes even more powerful and easier to use.’

What time will iOS 14 be available for download?

iOS 14 will be available to download later today, Wednesday, September 16.

Although there is no set time for the release, major Apple updates in the past have been available at around 6.00pm BST.

Updates usually take quite a while, so users may want to activate the update just before they go to bed.

Make sure you have access to WiFi as the file size will be too large to be supported by mobile data.

Google is making a major change to one of the best Chrome features



  • Google announced that the Chrome browser will shut down support for paid extensions, advising developers to make appropriate changes as the feature is deprecated.
  • Google explained that the web has evolved dramatically since the introduction of the Chrome Web Store, and developers have other tools at their disposal to monetize content.
  • The deprecation of the extension payments feature should also bolster the security of Chrome, preventing spammy extensions and scams from harming users.

Google’s Chrome internet browser may be a resource hog that kills laptop batteries, but it’s still the most popular browser in the world. One of the things that make it so popular is the support for extensions that can significantly improve one’s browsing experience. That’s an area where Apple’s Safari lags behind, and one reason I’ve stayed with Chrome on the MacBook for years.

But Google plans a significant change for Chrome shortly — well, another major change — that will impact Chrome extension developers directly. Google is now shutting down paid Chrome extensions, telling developers that they will have to find a new way to charge their customers.

Google put up a support page that addresses the change and the timeline for the update. The Chrome Web Store Payments deprecation will not happen instantly, so developers have time to make the appropriate changes. But all payments will be disabled by February 1st, 2021. Here’s what will happen once we reach that deadline:

Your existing items and in-app purchases can no longer charge money with Chrome Web Store payments. You can still query license information for previously paid purchases and subscriptions. (The licensing API will accurately reflect the status of active subscriptions, but these subscriptions won’t auto-renew.)

Developers who want to charge money for new extensions will not be able to do so and will have to find other ways of monetizing their Chrome apps.

Google isn’t shutting the door to monetization completely, it’s just the Chrome Web Store Payments system that’s shutting down, and Google. Developers will have to migrate to a different payment processor, and they’ll have to migrate license tracking as well. This may sound like a task for developers only, but Google does not that users might need to “help:”

There is no way to bulk export your existing user licenses, so you need to have your users help with this part of the migration.

In other words, if you’re paying for any Chrome extension, you should make sure you have your license ready when the time comes to transition to something else, especially if you’re on some subscription plan.

Google explains that the web “has come a long way” since the Chrome Web Store was launched, and that’s why things are changing. “In the years since, the ecosystem has grown, and developers now have many payment-handling options available to them,” Google says.

One other reason to remove Chrome Web Store payment support concerns user security. Google confirmed earlier this year an uptick in the number of fraudulent transactions that involved Chrome extensions, having temporarily disabled publishing paid items in late January.

How old age is changing: Researchers say senior citizens are fitter than ever before

Senior citizens are fitter and healthier than ever before, according to a new study.

Researchers found that older people are keeping physically fit and mentally strong for longer.

Older people’s physical and mental abilities have improved ‘meaningfully’ when compared to that of their peers three decades ago, according to new research.

Experiencing cognitive and physical decline after a certain age – known as the ‘lifetime maximum’ – is to be expected.

Rising living standards are however delaying the twilight years tipping point.

Co-author post doctoral student Matti Munukka, of the University of Jyväskylä in Finland, said: ‘The cohort of 75- and 80-year-olds born later has grown up and lived in a different world than did their counterparts born three decades ago.

‘There have been many favourable changes. These include better nutrition and hygiene, improvements in health care and the school system, better accessibility to education and improved working life.’

The researchers compared the physical and cognitive performance of 75 to 80-year-olds today with that of same-aged people during the 1990s.

Co-author Professor Taina Rantanen also at the University of Jyväskylä said: ‘Performance-based measurements describe how older people manage in their daily life, and at the same time, the measurements reflect one’s functional age.’

Muscle strength, walking speed, verbal fluency, reaction speed, reasoning and working memory among elderly men and women are nowadays ‘significantly’ better than 30 years ago, the scientists found.

Co-author Doctoral Student Kaisa Koivunen said: “Higher physical activity and increased body size explained the better walking speed and muscle strength among the later-born cohort.

‘Whereas the most important underlying factor behind the cohort differences in cognitive performance was longer education.’

Life expectancy in the UK for a baby born in 2018 now sits at 87.6 years for a boy and 90.2 years for a girl, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Professor Rantanen said: ‘This research is unique because there are only a few studies in the world that have compared performance-based maximum measures between people of the same age in different historical times.

‘The results suggest that our understanding of older age is old-fashioned.’

Understanding elderly people is particularly important for countries like the UK, which have an aging population.

Professor Rantanen said: ‘From an aging researcher’s point of view, more years are added to midlife, and not so much to the utmost end of life.

‘Increased life expectancy provides us with more non-disabled years, but at the same time, the last years of life comes at higher and higher ages, increasing the need for care.’

Average age in the UK is expected to increase from 40 to 45-years-old by 2050.

Professor Rantanen said: ‘Among the ageing population, two simultaneous changes are happening: continuation of healthy years to higher ages and an increased number of very old people who need external care.’

The findings were published in The Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences.

How Do Delivery Robots Work? How They Safely Deliver Your Packages



A distant future involving robotic package deliveries is now very much a reality. Advances in robotics, GPS tracking, automation, and navigation now mean you might not find a delivery person at your door with your package.

You might find a delivery robot instead.

With semi-autonomous robots beginning to enter the world, here’s a look at how delivery robots work.

What Is a Delivery Robot?

A delivery robot is an automated robot that brings your delivery directly to your door. These robots aren’t walking and talking humanoids; rather, these robots are cute delivery containers on six wheels, resembling giant (but friendly-looking!) bugs.

As with other delivery services, you make your purchases through an app with vendors based on your location. The robot trundles to the vendor—whether for shopping, food, drinks, or otherwise—and then it makes its way to your home.

How Does a Delivery Robot Work?

The primary example of delivery robots in action comes from Starship Technologies, a company based out of San Francisco with engineering facilities in Estonia and Finland. Starship Technologies is the brainchild of Skype co-founders Janus Friis and Anti Heinla, and they are currently the largest “last mile” delivery robot company around.

So, how does an autonomous delivery robot make a delivery?

The robots have a cargo capacity of around 9kg, can travel at a maximum speed of 4 mph, weigh around 25kg, and cost over $5,000 to manufacture. The delivery robot uses many of the same features as an autonomous car: 10 cameras for 360-degree vision, several ultrasonic sensors, GPS navigation, measurement units, gyroscopes, and much more.

How Do Delivery Robots Navigate?

The route between a vendor and a delivery point might look A-to-B if you plug the locations into a navigation app… but there are extra considerations for a delivery robot, including sidewalks, crossings, driveways, humans, animals, vehicles, and so on.

Starship’s robots calculate a route based upon the shortest distance and satellite imagery detailing the route. Each feature on the route (crossings, driveways, etc.) receives a time calculation, which the robot factors into route selection and delivery time.

Over time, the robots build a collaborative memory of an area, creating a wireframe map of constant features (buildings, crossings, statues, pathways, etc.) and ensuring that future journeys through the area are faster. The collaborative area-building makes navigation easier for every robot in the vicinity, with all units contributing to building out the local map.

But navigation isn’t always smooth sailing. Aside from regular navigational dilemmas, a malfunctioning robot comes with its own problems. For example, a Starship robot in Milton Keynes malfunctioned—and drove straight into a canal.

Does Anyone Control the Delivery Robot?

While the Starship Technology robots are autonomous, they are not disconnected from their operators. If a robot comes up against a significant challenge, such as a particularly massive curb (they can climb up and over regular sidewalk curbs), a human operator can take control and find a solution.

But for the most part, the robots are designed to take everything into account, focusing strongly on the sidewalk. Delivery robots sharing the same routes as pedestrians has all the potential for irritation.

All these potential issues are all considered, but the robots must learn the correct way to interact with humans. How many times have you faced the awkward situation of walking at a similar pace to someone just ahead of you? Do you speed up to pass, then continue walking faster? Do you slow down to give them time to move further ahead? Is your destination close enough so that you don’t need to overtake?

The delivery robots are learning how to solve these problems, as well as countless others.

How Do You Order Take-Out From a Robot?

Starship’s robotic delivery team are currently operating in several US cities but in limited geographic areas. For example, you can order via Starship at Arizona State University, in Fairfax City, Virginia, or Modesto, California—but only in a limited area. The images below show the delivery areas for those respective locations:

If the vendor you want to order from and your delivery address are with the bounds of the robot, you can order from the Starship Delivery app. The app displays a list of vendors you can make an order with. You place your order, and a local delivery robot makes its way to the vendor to pick up your order. The robot then trundles to your front door. You track the delivery robot using an app, as well as unlock the secure cargo compartment, too.

The Starship Technologies delivery service costs $1.99 per delivery.

For vendors, the reality is slightly different. The delivery robots are cute and get the job done, but Starship’s terms of partnership can take up to a 20% cut per delivery, after a free month’s trial of the service.

Delivery Robots and COVID-19

The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic provided a new and interesting dynamic for Starship Technologies and its delivery robots. With huge numbers of people entering lockdown at differing times and with many people attempting to self-isolate and socially distance from the general public, the delivery robots present a perfect non-human delivery system.

In Milton Keynes, UK, the demand for robot deliveries rose significantly during the early stages of the UK COVID-19 lockdown. The US cities and university campuses also saw similar demand for robotic, almost zero-human interaction deliveries. For those on at-risk lists due to pre-existing conditions or healthcare workers struggling to purchase groceries after a long shift, robotic deliveries are a vital lifeline.

Does Amazon Have Delivery Robots?

Starship Technologies was the first company to use delivery robots as its core delivery method. Recognizing that last-mile delivery is a phenomenally large market is a masterstroke. But the world’s largest online marketplace, Amazon, isn’t far behind.

Amazon Scout is another six-wheeled robot that moves across sidewalks and crossings at walking pace, but this one brings your Amazon delivery directly to your door. Scout is currently available to Amazon customers in the area near Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle, as well as Irving, California, with recent trial expansions to Atlanta, Georgia and Franklin, Tennessee.

Delivery Robots Are Coming to Your Home

A friendly delivery robot bringing curry to your door is charming and is a reality for millions of people. The rollout of delivery robots won’t be overnight, and there are significant challenges for the delivery robotics sector, as well as rural communities.
