Could a pill replace exercise? Scientists make bold claim about new protein

In the future, couch potatoes may get all the benefits of exercise without having to set foot in a gym.

Scientists believe they have discovered a protein that occurs naturally during workouts and could be developed as a pill to keep muscles strong.

The protein is called Sestrin and a study performed on mice and flies found that administering it resulted in them burning fat and gaining muscle even without exercise.

Humans produce the same protein and researchers think that making a supplement of it could help reduce muscle wastage in elderly or inactive people.

‘Sestrin alone is sufficient to produce many benefits of physical movement and exercise,’ said Dr Myungjin Kim, who led the research into the protein at Michigan University in the US.

In order to track the protein’s effectiveness in flies, the research team built a tiny fly treadmill – utilising the flies’ instinct to climb up and out of a test tube. The flies were monitored over three weeks and the team then compared the results with flies that were bred without the ability to produce Sestrin.

‘Flies can usually run around four to six hours at this point and the normal flies’ abilities improved over that period. The flies without Sestrin did not improve with exercise,’ Dr Kim said.

When they artificially boosted normal flies’ Sestrin levels to the maximum the flies’ results were stronger – even without exercise – than the trained flies.

Dr Kim added: ‘We propose that Sestrin can coordinate these biological activities by turning on or off different metabolic pathways. This kind of combined effect is important for producing exercise’s effects.’

The researchers also helped another collaborator to demonstrate that muscle-specific Sestrin can also help prevent atrophy in immobilised muscle, including the type that occurs when a limb is in a cast for long periods.

Dr Kim said: ‘This independent study again highlights that Sestrin alone is sufficient to produce many benefits of physical movement and exercise.’

But the researchers caution that it’ll be a while until we see any kind of Sestrin pill on the horizon.

Dr Kim said: ‘Sestrins are not small molecules, but we are working to find small molecule modulators of Sestrin.’

The research was published in the journal Nature Communications.

Apple warns that you could break your MacBook display with a camera cover

Published

on

  • Apple published a new support document in July to warn MacBook owners not to close their laptops when a camera cover is on, as it could damage the display.
  • Apple reminds MacBook owners that the FaceTime HD camera has an indicator light that always alerts the user when the camera is on.
  • If you’re going to use a camera cover, never forget to remove it before you close your MacBook.

As we’ve all become increasingly concerned with data privacy, covers for laptop webcams have become a necessary purchase for many laptop owners. The problem is that most laptops weren’t designed with accessories being attached to the display in mind, no matter how small, which is why Apple deemed it necessary to issue a warning on its website last week. As spotted by MacRumors on Friday, Apple now has a support page dedicated to telling MacBook owners to avoid closing their laptops when a cover is on the camera so as not to risk damaging the screen.

“If you close your Mac notebook with a camera cover installed, you might damage your display because the clearance between the display and keyboard is designed to very tight tolerances,” Apple writes on its support site. “Covering the built-in camera might also interfere with the ambient light sensor and prevent features like automatic brightness and True Tone from working. As an alternative to a camera cover, use the camera indicator light to determine if your camera is active, and decide which apps can use your camera in System Preferences.”

As MacRumors explains, this was likely precipitated by a series of complaints from MacBook users online who have reported that their displays have cracked or been damaged after covering the camera. The good news for that owner is that the crack was covered under AppleCare+ as accidental damage.

In order to try to dissuade MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air users from applying camera covers, Apple explains that the FaceTime HD camera “is designed with your privacy in mind and uses a camera indicator light that glows green when the camera is active. So you will always know when the camera is on.” Plus, in macOS Mojave or later, “you can control which apps have access to the built-in camera.”

If you work requires you to use a cover or you simply can’t live without it, Apple has offered up some helpful tips:

  • Make sure the camera cover is not thicker than an average piece of printer paper (0.1mm).
  • Avoid using a camera cover that leaves adhesive residue.
  • If you install a camera cover that is thicker than 0.1mm, remove the camera cover before closing your computer.

Privacy is paramount, but you don’t want to risk breaking your MacBook display. If you feel the need to use a camera cover, do not forget to remove it before you close the lid of the MacBook.

Microsoft is adding a virtual auditorium view to its Teams communication platform in a bid to make video meetings feel more natural during lockdown.

The firm has developed AI technology that places participants alongside one another, digitally seated with the same background, creating the impression everyone is in the same room.

‘Together mode’ is designed to help people feel more connected and less fatigued by video meetings, which have become commonplace among those working from home since coronavirus lockdown measures came into place in March.

The feature – which rolls out on Thursday before becoming generally available in August – is one of a number of improvements the tech giant is introducing on Microsoft Teams.

Users can expect to find video filter enhancements and emoji-based live reactions to pop up on screen among the raft of updates.

Microsoft Teams displays, a new category of device for the firm, has also been announced amid a surge in demand for video communication tools and growing competition from the likes of Zoom, Facebook and Google.

These Teams-focused devices will have an ambient touchscreen and a hands-free experience powered by Cortana.
