1. Coraline

This was Laika’s first full feature film, with the company going on to produce Paranorman, Boxtrolls, Kubo, and Missing Link.

2. Next Gen

Join Mai Su on her fated meeting with a weaponized robot named 7723. Through chance circumstance, the two form a surprising bond amidst their struggle to understand each other. The two then pull together to defeat one man’s plan for world domination.

Next Gen offers a downloadable alternative to The Iron Giant or Big Hero 6 on Netflix. While the title features plenty of intensive sci-fi battles, it also offers plenty of warmth as the characters of Mai and 7723 have you rooting for both of them constantly.

3. Leap

Leap tells the story of Félicie embarking on a journey to become a ballerina. Along with her childhood friend that dreams of being an inventor, the orphan pair sneaks off to Paris to pursue their dreams.

Leap offers an inspiring tale for all the dreamers out there. The fusion of pop music and classical tracks, the beautiful dance sequences, and the attention to detail all make it worth a watch.

4. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

In Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, a failing inventor creates a device that turns water into food. Despite seemingly turning his luck around, his machine goes out of control and threatens to end the world under a mountain of food. With a new fate thrust on him, he must figure out a way to stop the food apocalypse.

As an unusual disaster tale, the likes of the spaghetti tornado and other food destruction will surely bring a smile to your face.

5. Mary and the Witch’s Flower

In this title, a bored girl spots a cat and follows it into the woods. Her curiosity causes her to stumble upon the powerful Fly-by-Night flower and a broomstick. As a result, Mary ends up whisked away to a magical school where her adventure begins.

This, the first cinematic endeavor from Studio Ponoc, succeeds at building a natural and captivating world. With former Studio Ghibli animators on board as well, the visuals are both breathtaking and imaginative.

6. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales must deal with the balance of being a teenager in New York while also becoming the new Spiderman. After coming across Peter Parker, Miles finds himself involved in a multi-dimensional threat. Miles must rise to the occasion as a new hero to save the multiverse.

While the plot may sound like the usual hero’s tale, it’s just one small facet of the movie. With consistent praises for its characterization and animation, there’s no better time to check it out than now.

7. The Breadwinner

The Breadwinner tells the tale of a teenager named Parvana trying to help her family survive. After her father’s arrest under false charges, Parvana must pose as a boy to go outside freely in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. While keeping her family fed, she must find a way to avoid exposure and also save her father.

While seemingly sombre, The Breadwinner tells a powerful tale of hope. Animated by Cartoon Saloon, the team behind Song of the Sea and The Secret of Kells, this animated title continues its studio legacy of gorgeous art direction.

8. Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch

The retelling of the Grinch story continues the tale of the aggravated grump seeking to destroy Whoville’s Christmas celebrations. The Grinch knows the only way to stop their noisy cheer lies in him stopping Christmas from coming by stealing it away.

9. My Life as a Zucchini

After the accidental death of his mother, young Zucchini ends up placed in an orphanage. In his newfound circumstance, Zucchini must learn the meaning of trust and love.

While on the surface it appears to be a children’s stop-motion animated film, My Life as a Zucchini handles tough subjects such as alcoholism, abuse, death, and more. It’s unsafe for a young audience, but it’s a great cinematic bridge for many of the concerns of older youth.

10. 9

In a post-apocalyptic world, machines have wiped out humanity. Before his demise, a human scientist puts life into knitted ragdolls called stitchpunks. Upon waking, the youngest stitchpunk, 9, decides to lead the rest of his newfound allies out of hiding to discover the truth of their situation.

As an early steampunk title, 9 provides a cult classic option to the Netflix lineup. While not as revolutionary as Toy Story, it remains a hallmark of animated films for adults.

11. A Silent Voice

During his childhood, a grade school boy viciously torments a hearing-impaired girl in his class. She moves away, and the boy finds the tables suddenly turned on him. Years later, the former tormenter-turned-outcast attempts to make amends.

You Can Now Delete Your Old Facebook Posts in Bulk

It’s now easier to delete your old Facebook posts, either individually or in bulk. This will help anyone looking to move on in life, and erase the evidence of their past. Whether that’s in order to remove reminders of an ex-partner or to secure a new career.

When Facebook Posts Come Back to Haunt You

Facebook has been around for so long now that most of its users are very different people than they were when they joined the social network. They’re older and (hopefully) wiser, and they’re unlikely to want old Facebook posts to come back to haunt them.

To help avoid that fate, Facebook has launched Manage Activity, which lets you remove old posts from Facebook. You can either send them to an Archive (which hides them from everyone but you) or Trash them completely (which deletes them completely after 30 days).

How to Delete Your Old Facebook Posts

Once you have access to the Manage Activity feature, you can remove old posts at will. All you need to do is open your Activity Log and click Manage Activity. You’ll then be given the option to Manage Your Posts, with them all listed in chronological order.

If the post or posts you want to delete is recent, you can just scroll down to find it. However, you can also employ filters to narrow your results. Just press the Filters button and filter your posts by Category, Date, or People. All of which are self-explanatory.

Once you have found the post or posts you’re looking for, select them and then click either Archive or Trash. Archive hides posts from view to everyone but you. Trash removes posts from Facebook completely after 30 days (allowing you to change your mind).

Facebook is launching Manage Activity first on Facebook Lite and the Facebook mobile apps for Android and iOS. It will take several weeks to reach everyone, so you may not see it immediately. The social network has also promised to bring it to desktop in the future.

Manage Activity Is Better Late Than Never

Manage Activity is a good (albeit extremely overdue) tool we wish Facebook had launched years ago. How many people have lost their jobs or had relationships ruined thanks to old Facebook posts coming back to haunt them? Still, it’s better late than never.

Seeing as we’ve mentioned it in this article, here’s everything you need to know about Facebook Lite. And for anyone who’s really worried about the privacy implications of using Facebook, here’s what deactivating or deleting Facebook really means.

Instagram’s blackout means well—but doing these 4 things is more useful

“Blackout Tuesday” has overtaken Instagram, but there are more effective ways to show support.

What’s Blackout Tuesday? If you’ve been on Instagram today, you may notice black posts. The movement was started by musicians calling for “an urgent step of action to provoke accountability and change.” But if you want to support the protests against police brutality without marching, there are many other useful ways to do so.

  1. If you can afford to, donate money. In the immediate aftermath of George Floyd’s murder, activists urged people to donate to local organizations such as the Minnesota Freedom Fund and Black Visions Collective. But the movement has outgrown Minnesota. The American Civil Liberties Union, the Bail Project, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund are among those seeking donations. Medical donations are also being accepted to help injured protestors, including North Star Health Collective and the Gas Mask Fund.
  2. You don’t need to have cash to help. Consider calling to ask protesters and organizers if they need basics such as water, masks, hand sanitizer, even snacks. These supplies can be critical for protestors. If you’re in a city that’s seen looting, see how you can help with cleanup or beautification efforts.
  3. Call those in power. It’s an election year. If you care about police brutality and accountability, take the time to look at candidate stances and records and vote. Call your representatives to demand attention to police brutality.
  4. Confront your own biases. You might not think of yourself as a racist, but it’s important to understand how your words and actions can hurt people of color. Reading antiracist books is a good first step, but do more. Point out when a person is showing their white privilege: things they might benefit from as a white person that a person of color might have trouble accessing. Consider supporting a business owned by someone of color. It’s easier said than done and can sometimes be uncomfortable, but these smaller steps can lead to greater understanding.

Looters find that iPhones stolen from Apple Stores are bricked

Looting Apple Stores

  • Looters over the past few days have hit a number of Apple retail stores.
  • iPhones and iPads stolen from Apple Stores have a kill-switch and are essentially bricked once leaving Apple’s Wi-Fi network.

The senseless killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police has sparked a wave of nationwide protests against racial inequality and police violence. In the wake of these protests, some cities have experienced a rash of looting and vandalism. Incidentally, there’s been a decent amount of evidence which suggests that much of the looting has been spurred on by opportunists looking to score free stuff and stir up trouble as opposed to peaceful protestors.

Amidst all the turmoil, some Apple retail stores over the past few days have been targeted and hit by looters. Some of the impacted locations include retail stores in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. What’s worth noting, however, is that looters who manage to abscond with items like stolen iPhones and iPads quickly find out that their haul is worth next to nothing.

To this point, Apple over the years has implemented a number of security measures to deter would-be thieves from breaking into stores and stealing merchandise.

Forbes reports:

It has long been known that Apple operates some form of proximity software that disables a device when it is taken illegally from a store. Until now, though, little had been seen of that technology in action. Well, thanks to social media, we can now see the message that greets a looter powering up their new device: “This device has been disabled and is being tracked,” it says. “Local authorities will be alerted.”

We’ve previously reported that the iPhone and iPad demo units which line Apple retail stores are equipped with a “kill switch” that effectively brick the devices once they fall outside the range of Apple’s Wi-Fi network. Indeed, it’s why thieves who sometimes make out with hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen Apple merchandise quickly find out that it’s worth nothing and can’t be resold.

If you missed it earlier, Tim Cook addressed the ongoing protests for racial justice via an internal memo sent to Apple employees over the weekend.

The letter reads in part:

At Apple, our mission has and always will be to create technology that empowers people to change the world for the better. We’ve always drawn strength from our diversity, welcomed people from every walk of life to our stores around the world, and strived to build an Apple that is inclusive of everyone.

But together, we must do more. Today, Apple is making donations to a number of groups, including the Equal Justice Initiative, a non-profit committed to challenging racial injustice, ending mass incarceration, and protecting the human rights of the most vulnerable people in American society. For the month of June, and in honor of the Juneteenth holiday, we’ll also be matching two-for-one all employee donations via Benevity.

To create change, we have to reexamine our own views and actions in light of a pain that is deeply felt but too often ignored. Issues of human dignity will not abide standing on the sidelines. To our colleagues in the Black community — we see you. You matter, your lives matter, and you are valued here at Apple.

Cook’s full remarks can be viewed over here.
